A Community Anchor
Reaching Beyond Its Walls

St John's Church sits at the heart of Boxmoor, a corner of Hemel Hempstead where old neighbourhoods — Chaulden, Felden, Two Waters, Cornerhall — gather around a single parish. For generations the building has served as the spiritual and civic centre of a community of around eighteen thousand people.

Its relationships extend well beyond Sunday services. Eight local schools hold active ties to the Church — through assemblies, seasonal services, and community events that bring hundreds of young people through the doors each year.

But the infrastructure inside the building had not kept pace with how people now connect. Ageing equipment and an absence of reliable streaming capability meant that parts of the congregation — those unable to attend in person, or those tuning in from further afield — were simply excluded from the life of the church.

The Parish needed a solution that respected the sanctity and heritage of the space, while opening it to the expectations of a connected congregation.

Outdated Equipment,
Disconnected Congregation

The existing AV setup had served its time. Sound quality in the nave was uneven — adequate for those seated centrally, but difficult for worshippers near the aisles or at the rear. There was no structured provision for live streaming, meaning that vulnerable, elderly, or remote members of the parish had no way to participate in services.

Ageing AV Infrastructure No Streaming Capability Uneven Sound Coverage Heritage Building Constraints Complex Multi-Use Venue

Working in a Grade-listed building added a layer of complexity beyond the technical. Every installation decision needed to respect the architecture — the stone, the stained glass, the sightlines — without compromise to aesthetics or fabric of the building.

The Church also hosts a breadth of events beyond regular worship: school visits, community gatherings, concerts, and pastoral meetings. Any new system would need to serve all of them with minimal staff intervention.

The congregation is our community — but community no longer stops at the door. We needed people to feel present, wherever they are.

A Considered Fit-out,
Designed Around the Building

ProMediaIT approached the project with the care that a building of this character demands. Before any equipment was specified, the team invested time understanding how the space is actually used — the rhythms of the liturgical calendar, the informality of a school visit, the quiet of a weekday prayer service.

The result was a fully integrated AV and broadcast solution: new speaker arrays positioned to deliver consistent sound across the full breadth of the nave, a camera and production system capable of clean, broadcast-quality live streaming, and a control infrastructure simple enough that the church's own volunteers could operate it without specialist training.

Audio System Replacement
Discrete speaker placement delivering even coverage throughout the nave, optimised for both spoken word and music.
Live Streaming Infrastructure
Camera system and broadcast-grade encoding allowing services to reach congregation members online in real time.
Operator-Friendly Control
Streamlined control surface designed for volunteer operators — reliable, consistent, and low-maintenance.
Heritage-Sensitive Installation
All cabling and mounting solutions concealed with respect for the historic fabric and visual character of the building.

Across the full installation, ProMediaIT managed the project from initial survey through to handover — liaising with the Parish, accommodating the building's active calendar, and ensuring zero disruption to regular worship.

The Parish,
Open to Everyone

The completed installation transformed St John's from a building limited by its infrastructure into a venue ready for the full breadth of its community role.

  • Services now reach congregation members who cannot attend in person — elderly parishioners, those with mobility challenges, and families living further from Boxmoor.
  • Sound quality across the nave is consistent and clear, improving the experience for every person in the building, every service.
  • School assemblies and community events are supported by the same system, reducing the burden on volunteers and ensuring reliability when it matters most.
  • The installation is discreet — visitors to the church encounter the same beauty of the space, with technology quietly serving rather than intruding.
  • Church staff and volunteers operate the system confidently and independently, without the need for ongoing specialist support.

ProMediaIT understood from the start that this wasn't just a technical project. It was about making sure our community — all of it — could be part of something together.

Parish Leadership, St John's Boxmoor

For a parish that has served its corner of Hemel Hempstead for generations, the project is not a departure from tradition — it is a continuation of it. The mission of St John's has always been to reach the whole community. The new AV infrastructure simply extends the reach of that mission to wherever its congregation happens to be.
